An Upper Macungie Township man who told federal agents he bought castor beans to grow plants for his apartment wasn't actually interested in gardening, authorities said.

Instead, federal prosecutors say, Ishtiaq Ali Saaem bought 100 packets of the seeds and other potentially toxic plants as part of a plot to cook up an undetectable poison in his kitchen. After telling investigators the beans were for decorative purposes, he searched the internet for tasteless poisons that could be made at home, according to court records.

Four years later, Saaem was again visited by law enforcement agents in Pennsylvania. In July 2019, he again told agents he intended to buy one packet of castor beans and wanted to grow them because he liked the color of the castor oil plant's leaves.

"In fact, Saaem intentionally purchased castor beans which he sought to use to extract ricin", prosecutors said.
