The Pentagon and other top Defense Department officials have blasted Tucker Carlson for statements Wednesday evening in which the Fox News host criticized female service members for "making a mockery of the U.S. military".
Carlson, the eponymous host of one of the most popular cable news shows, centered on new military hairstyle regulations for women and that the military allows for female aviators who may be pregnant to wear maternity flight suits.
"Pregnant women are going to fight our wars. It's a mockery of the U.S. military", Carlson said. "While China's military becomes more masculine as it's assembled the world's largest navy, our military needs to become, as Joe Biden says, 'more feminine', whatever 'feminine' means anymore, since men and women no longer exist".
Defense Department spokesman John Kirby in an unprompted statement to reporters on Thursday derided Carlson's remarks.
"We still have a lot of work to do to make our military more inclusive", said Kirby, whose own wife, a Navy veteran, took leave for the birth of their child and returned to duty shortly after. "We recognize the lack of female leadership across the senior ranks".
"What we absolutely won't do is take personnel advice from a talk-show host or the Chinese military", Kirby added. "Maybe these people think they have something to prove. ...That's on them".
